Rangers stunned by 6-0 thrashing - May 14th, 2012 LEAGUE leader Geelong Rangers suffered a stunning 6-0 loss at the hands of Essendon United in the highly-anticipated top-of-the-table clash at Myers Reserve on Saturday. Both teams went into the game undefeated, with three wins and one draw, and both boasting some big wins in previous weeks. But second-placed Essendon United seemed to have a point to prove as they took the field in the first half, four goals to none sending the message that they were coming for the top spot on the ladder. The Rangers struggled to find any momentum going against the wind, and Essendon's strong defence kept them from getting near their goals for most of the first half. A red card send off to star player Scott Davison in the 22nd minute meant the Rangers were one down in the middle, coach Dale Harris admitting that was the beginning of their dirty day. "It was really difficult for us to get back after that. We didn't do ourselves any favours, that's for sure. Touches were poor and movement was poor. Today we were a shadow of the team we have been in previous matches," he said. The second half was much the same, with Essendon breaking the early gridlock with a goal, and another following shortly after to seal the impressive win away from home. Essendon United had a lot to like about their team's performance, especially from leading goal scorers Mark Sacco and Nathan Chapman, who scored two and three goals respectively. Meanwhile, Harris praised his elected man of the match David Ellis. "He gave me a lot of heart and won a lot of headers, he did really well." The Rangers will attempt to erase the round five loss from their memory as they take on Corio next week, while Essendon will look to stay on top with a victory over Moreland United at home.
